On August 12th, 2017, the Jagiellonian Prize was presented during the Feast of our University. This distinction in recognition of outstanding achievements for the political, economic, cultural and scientific development of Central Europe was given to Mr. Václav Klaus, Czech Prime Minister in 1992-1997 and President of the Czech Republic in 2003-2013.
The laudation in honor of the laureate was presented by prof. Grzegorz Górski.
During the ceremony, the letter of the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda, addressed to Mr. Klaus, was read by the President’s Advisor prof. Andrzej Zybertowicz. The others who paid tribute to the laureate were, among others, Deputy Minister for Education Mrs. Marzenna Drab, Deputy Marshal of the Province, Mr. Sławomir Kopyść and President of Toruń, Mr. Michał Zaleski.
Mr. President Václav Klaus in his speech focused on the issue of the preservation of its identity by the countries of our region in the European Union. You can read the speech of President Vaclav Klaus here.
It is worth mentioning that on the eve of our ceremony, Mr. President was received by President Michał Zaleski at a meeting with representatives of local government, business and science in the Royal Hall of the Old Town Hall.
The presence of President Václav Klaus in Toruń was a great event that attracted the attention of not only the communities of our city. We thank this one of the greatest European politicians at the turn of the 20th and 21st century for visiting the city of Copernicus.
In the second part of the University Ceremony, distinctions were awarded to employees of the Jagiellonian College and diplomas of graduation from the Yearbook 2017.
